Travelers offers many discounts, making its car insurance rates more competitive. The biggest savings come from bundling your car and homeowners policies.

You can also save big by enrolling in IntelliDrive, Travelers’ smartphone-based safe driving program. The app monitors your driving for 90 days to determine if you should get future discounts, although your rates may increase if the system detects unsafe driving.

Other discounts from Travelers include:

  • Home-ownership discount, even if you insure your home with a different company
  • Safe-driver discount for avoiding tickets and accidents for at least three years
  • Discount for driving a hybrid or electric vehicle
  • New car discount for vehicles less than three model years old

In addition to all the normal car insurance coverages, such as liability and collision, Travelers offers gap insurance and original equipment coverage.

  • Gap insurance covers the difference between your car’s value and your loan balance. Lenders typically require GAP insurance if you owe more on your car than its market value.
  • Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage pays to replace damaged parts with original ones. Without this coverage, your insurance company may only pay for cheaper, after-market parts.

Travelers’ new car replacement covers a new car for up to five years. Other companies also offer new car replacement, but their coverage usually only lasts one or two years.

Travelers charges an average of $3,149 a year for homeowners insurance, or $262 a month.

Although this amount is 11% higher than the national average, Travelers’ rates vary by state. For example, in Kansas, Maryland and Massachusetts, it offers the cheapest homeowner policy rates among the major insurers.

Travelers offers fewer discounts for homeowners insurance than it does for car insurance.

Its key home insurance discounts include:

  • Multipolicy discount for combining your home and car insurance
  • Homebuyer discount, if you’ve purchased your home within the past 12 months
  • Discount for smoke detectors, interior sprinklers or other protective devices
  • Discount for certified “green” homes

Travelers offers all the normal home insurance coverages and upgrades, but not much else.

Its standard policies cover your belongings at “actual cash value,” or the value of your stuff after depreciation. However, you can pay extra for “replacement cost coverage,” which covers stolen or damaged items at the price they cost when new.

Travelers’ water backup endorsement is usually worth adding to your home insurance. This covers cleanup and repairs for a sewer or drainage backup, which can get extremely messy.

You can also add identity fraud protection to a Travelers home insurance policy. However, the coverage caps out at $25,000, which might not be very much in some situations.
