Meanwhile, 60% of the 25 most popular vehicles among women are sedans, versus 44% among men.
- A sedan tops the insurance list for the youngest and oldest generations, while the middle generations look to insure a truck the most. The most popular vehicle to insure among Gen Zers, millennials and the silent generation is either the Honda Civic or Toyota Camry, while Gen Xers and baby boomers are mainly insuring Ford F-150s.

The make and model of your vehicle could have a meaningful impact on the cost of your car insurance. The vehicle class you select could also affect insurance rates. A standard or base model vehicle, for example, will likely cost less to insure than a luxury model vehicle with a high-end trim level and additional features.
Rob Bhatt, LendingTree auto insurance expert and a licensed insurance agent, says: “Insurance rates are generally tied to a car’s market value, but there are variations. For example, a sports car with a high horsepower engine usually costs more to insure than a minivan with a comparable price or ‘book value.’”
Similarly, vehicles with safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes often cost less to insure than comparably priced vehicles without those features. Likewise, cars easier to steal tend to feature higher insurance rates than vehicles featuring better anti-theft protection.

The Toyota Camry is the most popular insurance choice in seven cities. Notably, four of those are in the West.
The Tesla Model 3 is the most popular car to insure in three cities — all in California. Tesla manufactures the second or third most popular car to insure among drivers in five of the 50 largest cities as well. Except for Miami and Seattle, all those locations are also in California.
Men 5 times more likely than women to insure trucks; women prefer sedans
It’s probably no surprise that trucks are a more common choice among male drivers than women. However, you might not realize that men insure trucks five times as often as women.
When you examine the 25 most popular vehicles for insurance shoppers by gender, five trucks occupy the list for men, including the F-150 in first and the Chevrolet Silverado in second.

Gender clearly plays a role in vehicle preferences. Yet it’s also important to note that, in most states, gender is a factor that insurance companies may use to set your insurance premium.
According to a LendingTree study, women in their mid-30s pay more for car insurance than men in 37 states. But male teen drivers pay significantly higher car insurance rates — $504 more a year on average — than female teen drivers.
“Accidents cost insurance companies money,” Bhatt says. “So they charge more to drivers who seem more likely to be involved in an accident.”
Sedan most popular vehicle for oldest, youngest generations; middle generations look to truck
Different age groups have differing preferences for vehicles. Among the oldest generation and the two youngest generations, insurance shoppers gravitate toward sedans most of all. Meanwhile, middle generations (Gen Xers and baby boomers) prefer trucks — especially the F-150.
It’s interesting to note that the Toyota Camry is among the three most popular cars to insure across every generation. And the most popular vehicle to insure among Gen Zers (ages 18 to 26 in 2023), millennials (ages 27 to 42) and the silent generation (ages 78 to 95) is either the Honda Civic or Toyota Camry.

Age is another factor that could significantly impact your car insurance rates. Your age may especially affect your car insurance premiums when you’re a teen or after retirement age.
“If you maintain a clean driving record, you’ll qualify for your best car insurance rates from your mid-30s through your mid-60s,” Bhatt says. “Teen drivers have considerably higher accident rates than any other age group, and they’re charged the highest rates. Most people begin qualifying for more affordable rates in their mid-20s.”
No matter how old you are, too many tickets or at-fault accidents on your driving record could increase your insurance premiums. So, practicing safe driving habits is important to keep your insurance rates as affordable as possible.
How to shop for car insurance: 3 tips
Whether you need car insurance for a new vehicle purchase or want to save money on your current auto insurance rates, shopping for car insurance is roughly the same. Below are three tips you can use as you search for the best car insurance policy to suit your needs.
Compare multiple offers
Different drivers have different auto insurance needs. It’s important to shop around to find the insurance company with the best solution for your specific situation at the best price available.
“Each insurance company uses a different system to determine your rate,” Bhatt says. “Some companies are more forgiving of a prior ticket or accident. Some companies give you a steeper discount for a good driving record or good credit. Comparing quotes from multiple companies helps you find the one whose rating system favors your situation the most.”
Search for discounts
Car insurance companies often offer different types of discounts that could help you save on your car insurance premiums. In fact, many of the questions a car insurance company asks you when you request a quote may be designed to see if you qualify for discount opportunities.
“Although a 2% discount here or a 5% discount there may not seem like much,” says Bhatt, “they can often add up to significant savings.”
Pay attention to your credit
Before applying for a new car insurance policy, it could be worth making sure your credit history is in the best shape possible. Good credit could help you save money on your insurance rate in certain cases.
Some states have restrictions on the use of credit-based insurance scores. “California, Hawaii and Massachusetts, for example, don’t allow insurance companies to use your credit data to determine your rate,” Bhatt says.
But if you live in a state where your credit score has the potential to impact your car insurance rates, working to improve your credit might benefit you.
Methodology
Researchers analyzed tens of millions of QuoteWizard by LendingTree insurance quotes from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2023.
To determine the most popular to insure, researchers evaluated the makes and models of vehicles with the most quotes to insure them. We didn’t include model year in our analysis. Using this data, we determined the most popular nationally and by state, city, gender and generation.
To define generations, LendingTree analysts used the following ranges from the Pew Research Center:
- Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2005; ages 18 to 26 in 2023 — we only included Gen Z adults)
- Millennial (born between 1981 and 1996; ages 27 to 42 in 2023)
- Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980; ages 43 to 58 in 2023)
- Baby boomer (born between 1946 and 1964; ages 59 to 77 in 2023)
- Silent generation (born between 1928 and 1945; ages 78 to 95 in 2023)
Additionally, researchers gathered Kelley Blue Book data by models for vehicle classes, manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRPs) and combined miles per gallon (mpg). 2023 model data was used when available; we highlight the year when 2023 wasn’t available.
