How LendingTree Rates Credit Cards?
Our experts rate credit cards based on several factors including card benefits, bonus offers and independent research. Credit card issuers do not influence or have a say in our card ratings. Read our credit card methodology here. The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card is a good card if you don’t have existing credit history and are unable to find a traditional credit card that you qualify for. This card is especially useful because it does not require a credit score, bank information or a Social Security number to be approved.
This is an unsecured card, which means you will not have to put down a deposit to get the card. It comes with an initial credit line of up to $1,000. While this card may seem like an easy choice for those with limited credit, it does not offer much in terms of benefits. This means you’ll want to check out your other options before applying.
You must respond directly to this offer to receive these terms. Applications in response to other offers may result in different terms. See the online provider's credit card Cardholder Agreement for details about terms and conditions. Reasonable efforts are made to maintain accurate information. When you click on the "Apply Now" button, you can review the credit card terms and conditions on the provider's website.

No credit history or social security needed
When you apply for the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card you are not required to show many of the items a traditional credit card requires like proof of credit history or a Social Security number. Oportun uses its own proprietary technology to determine your creditworthiness based on other factors. You’ll just need to provide an email address, mobile number, photo ID, proof of income and proof of address.
If you are wondering if you meet the requirements for the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card, Oportun can prequalify you with a soft credit pull, which won’t impact your credit. However, once you formally apply, a hard inquiry will be performed.
No security deposit required
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card is an unsecured card, which means you will not have to put down a deposit as your line of credit. Although you will save on not having a deposit, there are other fees associated with this card, including an annual fee that you could avoid by choosing a secured card. Many of the best options for poor or limited credit are secured cards with a refundable deposit required.
Credit lines up to $1,000
With the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card, cardholders can receive an initial credit line of up to $1,000. This is a pretty decent amount considering that the issuer doesn’t require a security deposit or an established credit history to apply.
That being said, some of the best cards for poor or limited credit offer a higher credit limit range with no deposit. For example, the AvantCard Credit Card offers a credit limit from $300 to $3,000.
Reports to all three major credit bureaus
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card reports to all three major credit bureaus so this card can help you build or repair your credit score. Lenders typically look at your FICO score when you are applying for a credit card. This score is generated using credit report information collected by the three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
A reliable, on-time credit card payment history can allow you to establish and build credit so you can eventually apply for a traditional credit card with additional benefits and rewards.
Worldwide acceptance and no foreign transaction fees
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card can be used across the globe everywhere Visa is accepted. It also has no foreign transaction fees. This means you won’t be charged a fee when using your card outside of the U.S.
Annual fee and other potential fees
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card comes with an annual fee ranging from $0–$49, depending on your creditworthiness. In addition, the card charges late payment fees of up to $35 and returned payment fees of up to $35.
That said, the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card doesn’t charge some of the other fees typically associated with cards for limited credit, such as setup fees, monthly fees and maintenance fees.
No rewards program
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card doesn’t provide the opportunity to earn rewards on the purchases you make or a sign-up bonus. There are some cards for poor or limited credit do offer rewards if this is must-have for you.
Remember, if you’re trying to establish or build credit, it’s wise to direct your attention toward paying your credit card bill in full and on time each month, rather than earning points or cash back rewards.
High interest rate
If you carry a balance on your Oportun® Visa® Credit Card from month to month, you’ll be subject to high interest rates with a 24.90%-29.90% Variable APR. There is no intro APR on purchases or balance transfers with this card.
Credit limit could be low
The Oportun® Visa® Credit Card offers a credit limit that could be as high as $1,000 but as low as $330. Opportun will not let you know what your credit limit will be until you are approved for the card.
If you are looking to know your credit limit ahead of time or have the chance for a higher credit limit, you may want to consider a card with more transparent terms or a secured credit card that allows you to control your credit limit with a deposit. Some cards like the Capital One Platinum Credit Card even offer a chance to increase your credit limit with automatic account reviews starting at six months.

The Petal® 1 No Annual Fee Visa® Credit Card is another good option for those with limited or no credit history to start building credit. This card does not require a deposit and has a slightly higher credit limit range of $300 to $5,000. Similar to the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card, you will not have to provide a credit score in order to get approved for the card. The Petal® 1 No Annual Fee Visa® Credit Card uses a “Cash Score” made up of banking and billing patterns to determine if you will be approved for the card.
Unlike the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card this card comes with a $0 annual fee and a rewards program on some purchases. Earn 2% to 10% cash back at select merchants. This is rare to find in an unsecured card for building credit. With fewer fees, a higher credit limit and extra perks like a rewards program, the Petal® 1 No Annual Fee Visa® Credit Card is a better option for those with limited credit.
The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is a great alternative to the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card because unlike most credit building cards it offers a cash back program, straightforward terms and no expensive fees. It is a secured card so you will have to put down a deposit ranging from $200 to $2,500, but there is a $0 annual fee and your deposit will act as your line of credit.
The Discover it® Secured Credit Card also offers a unique way to upgrade to an unsecured card. After you have had the card for seven months, Discover will automatically review your account monthly to see if you are eligible to upgrade to an unsecured card. You will get your deposit refunded when you upgrade. This card also reports to all three major credit bureaus making it a great credit-building card.
Although the Discover it® Secured Credit Card requires you to put down a deposit, when you compare it to the high fees that you will have to pay with the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card, you may be better off with a refundable deposit.
If you have no credit history or lack a Social Security number, the Oportun® Visa® Credit Card can help you establish or build your credit profile by practicing responsible card usage. But if you are able to get approved for a card with fewer fees and more benefits or if you are able to put down a refundable security deposit, you will want to choose another card.
Once you receive your card, you can create an online account at account.Oportun.com/creditcards. Once created, you can manage your account, check your balance, view transactions and statements, make a payment or manage alerts whenever you want.
