What is a sign-up bonus on a credit card?
A sign-up bonus (sometimes called a welcome offer or welcome bonus) is an incentive offered by credit card issuers to motivate consumers to apply for a credit card. Sign-up bonuses usually come in the form of cash back, points or miles — however, there are some exceptions. For example, some hotel credit cards offer free nights instead of points, which can often be a greater value. Just keep in mind that most sign-up bonuses are earned, not given. Typically, you’ll need to spend a certain amount on the card within the first few months to earn your bonus.
How do credit card sign-up bonuses work?
Despite the name, a sign-up bonus isn’t earned when you sign up for the card. Once you’re approved for the card, you’ll typically have around three to six months — depending on the card issuer — to earn your sign-up bonus. The higher the bonus, the more you typically have to spend to earn it. Once you’ve hit the spend requirement, it can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks for the bonus to post to your account.
Note: Sign-up bonuses are all or nothing — if you don’t hit the spend requirement within the designated time frame, you’ll miss out on the bonus entirely.
How to choose the best credit card sign-up bonus
With so many options, choosing the best sign-up bonus credit card can be challenging. There are several important factors to consider, including the bonus type (cash back, points or miles) and qualifying restrictions. Here are a few steps you’ll want to follow when making your decision:
1. Make sure your credit history is up to par
First, look at the eligibility requirements of the cards that you are considering. Most sign-up bonus credit cards require a good credit score (a FICO Score of 670 or above) for approval. If your credit is lacking, you may want to consider a credit card to build credit to help you boost your score. While not as common, some of these cards offer sign-up bonuses as well.
Don’t know your credit score? Sign up for LendingTree Spring to get your free credit score and recommendations to boost your score.
2. Choose the type of rewards you want to earn
The next step is deciding what type of rewards you want to earn. As you’ll see in the table below, there’s something for everyone:
One of the most important things to consider when making your choice is the card’s annual fee. While some of our picks are free to carry, others come with annual fees that can take a huge chunk out of your bonus. For example, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®‘s bonus is worth around $1,800*, but its $595 annual fee brings the actual value down to $1,205. However, premium cards usually come with premium perks that can make up the difference. You just need to consider what’s more important in the long run.
Aside from your credit score and financial situation, many issuers have additional qualifying restrictions on sign-up bonuses. Even someone with perfect credit might open a card and meet a spending threshold just to learn that they weren’t qualified for the bonus. Major issuers typically put restrictions on earning sign-up bonuses to avoid credit card churning — the practice of repeatedly opening and closing credit cards with the intention of earning sign-up bonus rewards. Make sure that you always read the fine print of the offer before you apply.
Bank of America doesn’t note any restrictions specific to sign-up bonuses. However, you may not qualify for a card if you’ve had it within the past 24 months.
Chase has an unwritten 5/24 rule that prevents you from being approved for a new Chase card if you’ve opened five personal credit cards (from any issuer) within the past 24 months. In addition, if you’ve received a new cardmember bonus for a particular card (or card in the same family) within the past 24 months, you won’t be eligible to receive the current sign-up bonus for that card.
Wells Fargo doesn’t have any hard-and-fast rules when it comes to sign-up bonuses. However, you may not qualify for an additional Wells Fargo credit card if you’ve opened one in the past six months.
5. Calculate the value of the bonus
It’s crucial to understand the value of an offer before you apply. While cash back bonuses are fairly straightforward, the value of points and miles can vary dramatically depending on how you redeem them. For example, with Delta, 50,000 miles is worth around $550 in airfare because Delta miles valued around 1.1 cents each. It’s therefore important to estimate the point value and the overall value of the bonus based on how you intend to redeem the rewards in order to properly compare.
How to calculate the value of a sign-up bonus
To determine point/mile value, you’ll first need to take the cash value of your target redemption option and divide it by the number of points or miles — be sure to subtract any taxes and fees that you have to pay in cash.
Point value = $ value of target redemption option (minus taxes/fees) ÷ number of points Example: $500 plane ticket – $11.20 taxes ÷ 50,000 points = ~$0.01
Then, take the point value and multiply it by the number of points in the sign-up bonus. That will give you an approximate cash value for that card’s welcome offer.
Bonus value = $ value of points or miles x number of points or miles Example: 80,000 miles x $0.01 (1 cent per point) = $800
Frequently asked questions
The best cash back credit cards typically offer cash sign-up bonuses worth $200 or more. Just note that you’ll have to earn the bonus by meeting the offer’s spend requirement within the designated time frame (usually the first three months). For example, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card lets you earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.
In most cases, credit card sign-up bonuses are not taxable. Since most welcome offers require you to spend a certain amount to earn the bonus, the IRS considers this a rebate rather than taxable income. But if you receive a bonus without a spend requirement, it may be taxable. If this is the case, you will need to submit a Form 1099-MISC to the IRS.
Choosing the best credit card sign-up bonus depends on whether you want to earn cash back, points or miles. Travel credit cards typically offer the highest bonus values in points or miles, but they also come with heftier spend requirements and annual fees that cut into your rewards. Cash back credit cards often lack an annual fee and offer lower sign-up bonuses that are easier to earn.
Methodology: How we chose the best sign-up bonuses
To select the best credit card sign-up bonuses for each of these categories, our experts compared a broad range of credit cards on LendingTree.com and major issuer sites, including cash back cards, travel cards, business cards and more. We chose our top picks based on a variety of factors:
Value of the card’s sign-up bonus
Type of rewards offered
Spending threshold required to earn the bonus
The card’s annual fee
The ongoing value of the card once the bonus has been earned
Other factors that come into play when making our selection include the variety of benefits the card offers, including insurance protections and travel perks.

“I’m currently using the Citi Simplicity® Card to pay off a high-interest balance I transferred from an older card. I love this card because it has a reasonable balance transfer fee and gives you almost two years to pay off your balance. My everyday cards are the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card and Amazon Prime Visa, which I use to earn cash back on every single purchase I make. Between these two cards, I usually earn over $700 each year!”
