Where you live is just one of the factors that determines what you pay for car insurance. Other factors include:
- Make and model of your car
- Your insurance claim history
- Your ZIP code
- Your age
Car insurance companies weigh these factors differently. One may consider the make of your car a bigger risk factor than its competitors. Another may put your claim history first. This makes comparing quotes from several companies all the more important, especially with the price hikes that come with a DUI.
How a DUI affects your insurance
A DUI can result in higher insurance rates and affect you in other ways, too.
Higher rates
Car insurance companies often consider drivers with a DUI to be among the riskiest to cover, and charge them much higher rates to offset that risk.
These increases usually stay on your record for three to five years, but it can be longer depending on the state you live in.
Suspended license and SR-22
After a DUI conviction, your license may be suspended as well. If it is, you might need to file an SR-22 to get your license reinstated. An SR-22 proves you carry at least the minimum amount of car insurance your state requires.
Depending on where you live, you’ll need to keep filing your SR-22 for one to five years, with three years being the most common duration. You should expect to pay higher car insurance rates during this time.
Cancelled or refused coverage
Auto insurers may cancel your policy or refuse to sell you coverage due to a DUI. If you have trouble finding car insurance after a DUI, look at high-risk insurance companies.
If you continue to struggle after that, contact your state’s insurance commission. Every state has a program to make sure drivers can get minimum liability insurance. It can be expensive, but you’ll have coverage.

The following coverage limits were used:
- Bodily injury liability: 50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
- Property damage liability: $25,000
- Uninsured motorist: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, where required by law
- Personal injury protection: minimum limits, where required by law
- Collision: $500 deductible
- Comprehensive $500 deductible
Frequently asked questions
Car insurance companies raise your premium after a DUI because they consider you high risk. They also want to protect themselves against future claims they think you may file.
Car insurance companies are alerted to a DUI on your driving record during your annual renewal time. This is when they look at your record for changes that might prompt a rate change.
Your insurer will find out about the DUI sooner if you need to contact them about filing an SR-22 form. This will not cause your rate to go up right away, but you should expect it to happen at renewal time. If your current company raises your rates too much, take the opportunity to compare quotes with other insurers.
A DUI will affect your car insurance rates for at least three years. This length of time could be longer, depending on factors such as the state you live in and your auto insurance company.
It normally takes three to seven years for a DUI to drop off your record. While the DUI may no longer be part of your record after a certain period of time, your ability to qualify for discounts such as a good driver discount may be affected longer.
